Maldives - General Info

The Maldives is a chain of 26 atolls lying 600km Southwest of Sri Lanka at the Southern tip of India. The Maldives archipelago is made up of about 1,200 small coral islands in the Indian Ocean, more than 1,000 of them uninhabited and none of them much above sea level.

Some Facts about the Maldives

• The Maldives is entirely made up of atolls and associated structures.
• 99% of the Maldives is water and just 1% land.
• The Maldives hold the world record of having the lowest highest point in any country.
• There are 70 protected bird species, 9 protected marine species and 25 protected marine areas in the country.
• Over 1000 species of fish have so far been catalogued from the Maldives and 300 of there were recorded from the Maldives for the first time.
• 200 species of coral representing 60 genera have been recorded here.
• Maldivian’s have practiced dolphin friendly fishing for centuries.

Climate

The Maldives has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year round and many hours of sunshine. With an average temperature of 31°C and an average minimum temperature of 26°C there are only minor variations in daily temperature throughout the year.

The hottest month on average is April and the coolest December. February is the driest with December through Aril being considered generally to be the driest months.

Dress & Clothing

Dress is casual. Light cotton clothing is recommended, except on special occasions or for those that wish to dress elegantly when staying at luxury hotel, casual is the norm. Dress modesty when visiting inhabited islands out of respect. Nudism is prohibited.

Language

Dhivehi is the language spoken in all parts of the Maldives. English is widely spoken by Maldivians and visitors can easily make themselves understood getting around the capital island. In the resorts, a variety of languages are spoken by the staff including English, German, French, Italian and Japanese.

Health

Health care facilities are improving almost on a daily basis. The Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Male is the biggest hospital in the country providing sophisticated medical care. ADK Hospital is the biggest private health care facility and follows high medical standards. Some resorts have in-house doctors. A decompression chamber is within easy reach of most resorts in case of a diving emergency.

Time Difference

The Maldives is GMT +5 hours. 
However, Kuredu, Komandoo & Vakarufalhi resorts operate on what they call "Island Time" which is GMT +6 hours. This is so that clients get an earlier start, and therefore see more daylight during their time on the islands.

Communications

Up-to-date technology and international satellite links allow the Maldives to have a sophisticated communications system. International Direct Dial telephone facilities are available on all resorts and card phones are available on all inhabited islands. Dhiraagu, the Maldives Telecommunications Company also provides mobile telephones for daily rental. It is also the Internet service provider.

Electricity Supply

The electric system is 220-240 Volts - the same as the UK. The plug sockets are usually 3-pin UK type sockets too.
