Bugibba dive centres heading
We offer two diving centres in the Bugibba area of St. Paul's bay. Both of which are an easy walk (10 minutes or less) to all the accommodation we offer we offer in this area.
- Maltaqua is a well known and respected PADI 5* CDC centre and BS-AC centre which has been established since 1970. The centre is professionally run and managed by Mike & Agnes Upton.
- Subway Scuba is a well run and managed PADI 5* IDC centre and is well known accross Malta.
Read more about these two centres below.

Maltaqua is a BSAC Premier School and PADI 5* Career Development Centre. Founded in 1970 by Mike and Agnes Upton (PADI Staff Instructors and BSAC Advanced Instructors), the centre is still run by them to this day.
Rest assured - you are in very capable hands diving with Maltaqua!

Maltaqua is situated on the main road through the old village of St. Paul's Bay, part of the St. Paul's Bay/Bugibba/Qawra, conglomerate which is one of the two main tourist areas on the island. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and other facilities nearby.

Diving in Malta is easy. At most sites you can drive virtually to the waters’ edge, kit up and jump into the clear, warm, azure sea. The bottom shelves down in steps to reach 25 to 30 metres within a 5 minute swim, offering a choice of diving depths to suit each level of ability. The rock has been eroded to produce caves, caverns, overhangs, swim-throughs and the most spectacular scenery. There are no tides and few currents so you can throw away your tide tables and dive when you feel like it. The Island is large enough to offer a sheltered side when the wind blows but small enough to allow a drive to any site within 30 minutes.

There are several easily accessible wrecks, the largest being the recently sunk, 105 metres "El Faroud", lying in 35 metres at Wied iz- Zurrieq (Blue Grotto).

Above: The 'El Faroud' tanker being pushed into position
just before she was scuttled. An amazing dive - trust me!

Maltaqua dive every morning and afternoon (except Sundays, when the centre is closed) and visit the most popular sites around Malta, Gozo & Comino. There is a boat excursion organised every other day, which allows for a very pleasant day trip with two dives and some time-out in between diving for sunbathing or swimming in one of the picturesque bays around Malta. Once or twice a week there is a day trip to Gozo by ferry, for diving some of the best Gozo dive sites like the Inland Sea and the Blue Hole, as these are best dived from the shore.

Maltaqua has a very well stocked dive shop offering a wide range of brands at very competitive prices. In fact they also have there own wetsuit factory on site, where they can make you a tailor-made wetsuit to your exact requirements!

Subway Scuba have a good reputation in Malta and the centre has achieved PADI IDC status (Instructor Development Centre) and National Geographic Dive Centre. They have been established in Malta since 1986 and are located in Bugibba.

Subway are located on Pioneer Road in the centre of Bugibba, and not far from the accommodation that we offer in this area.
Note: clients wishing to stay at Sands Apartments, must book diving with Maltaqua Centre, since these apartments are owned by Maltaqua!

The philosophy at Subway extends to a real sense of responsibility for the conservation of the undersea world. Throughout courses and dive expeditions, our instructors and guides pass on their experience and skills not only to achieve safety and responsibility that the sport requires, but also to ensure the same for the environment.

Subway has a well stocked retail shop offering a large variety of the latest equipment from CRESSI SUB, SCUBAPRO, MARES, SPIRO, etc. An indoor heated pool for training purposes is also available as well as showers, changing rooms and lockers.

Subway offers lessons delivered in most European Languages. A full range of PADI courses are avilable, from beginner to instructor and 15 Specialty Courses to choose from. Instructor Development Courses and Instructor Examinations are available several times per year.

An in-house Medical Practitioner is available at all times to offer guidance and assistance to all those making use of our facilities.

For the experienced diver we can offer the most magnificent dives around our islands. Accompanied by our instructors, you will be taken in groups, according to your diving experience, to exotic dive sites by boat or car. Some of these sites are remote, so adventure is guaranteed!
